What is Domain Registration?

Domains can be thought of as the address of your website.  Instead of a street address you have a domain name followed by an extension.  The extension could be .com .net .info .mobi .me .name or many others.  You can think of extensions as the street endings like avenue, street, drive, or blvd.

All the pages of your website will contain your domain name in them.

For example:

or

What Comes With Domain Registration?

Domains are like web real estate or internet property.  When you register a domain name, you get control of the website that surrounds that domain.

You also get control of subdomains such as [www.SubDomain.YourDomainName.com]

Domain names also come with the ability to make email addresses @YourDomainName.com.

Example Email Address: YourName@YourDomainName.com

What Does Not Come With Domain Registration?

Domains by themselves do not come with a place to put your website.  You must buy disk space and bandwidth to associate files with your domain name.  The files will be the structure of your website.

Renting or buying disk space and/or bandwidth for your website is called web hosting.  Think of your domain as your address and your hosting as the frame of your house.  The individual files of your website is your furniture and decor.

You must register a domain to purchase web hosting, but you do not have to purchase web hosting to register a domain.  Some people will register domain names to reserve them or resell them.

Without Web Hosting the domain name is practically a sitting duck.  On the other hand, older domains can rank on search engines much easier, therefore are more valuable.  If you get relevant domain names, their age will make them worth more then you paid for them.
